GBS12-75 belongs to the Zelus-GBS gel solar series, which uses valve-regulated sealed lead-acid (VRLA) technology built around gelled electrolyte: sulfuric acid is mixed with fumed silica to form a stable, non-flowing gel. This almost completely avoids the electrolyte evaporation and spillage common with traditional flooded batteries, and therefore effectively prevents the corrosion that follows. Gel batteries show stronger performance, including greater tolerance of extreme temperatures and outstanding resistance to shock and vibration; their valve-regulated system safely vents the gas generated inside the battery. Structurally the battery resembles a non-sealed wet battery, but the key difference is that calcium replaces the antimony in the lead plates, a change that greatly reduces the tendency to evolve gas while preserving good mechanical properties.
